Erm, it seems that the number of ubuntu users keeps growing but why made you switch to ubuntu???

I did not have time after my trip in Central America to give it a go, but I start to wonder what makes so many persons using it...

Any ubuntu users to give me some hints

    Cheers,
    Ludo

I've installed mythtv on a Ubuntu system before, although I'm not running Ubuntu at the moment.

I used the prebuilt .deb packages to install Myth. As I recall, there were a couple of dependent packages that I had to get directly from Debian unstable (let's see, those were libartsc0 and libasound2).

But once I installed those, I could get the myth packages from:
    deb ftp://ftp.nerim.net/debian-marillat/ unstable main
    deb http://dijkstra.csh.rit.edu/~mdz/debian unstable mythtv

I also built the ivtv drivers from source (http://ivtv.no-ip.info/ivtv-0.2.0-rc3h.tgz). This was easier than trying to use the native Debian modules.

Although I had lirc working at one point, I decided to go with a wireless keyboard, so I'm not using that anymore.

I'm using ubuntu but I can't get MythTV to run

all i did was "sudo apt-get install mythtv" which downloads and installs mythtv and all the dependencies,, still trying to get it to work at the moment, this is the error i get

    h3x@01A4:~$ mythtv
    2005-09-07 14:38:39.237 Switching to square mode ()
2005-09-07 14:38:39.253 Unable to connect to database!
    2005-09-07 14:38:39.253 Driver error was [1/1045]:
    QMYSQL3: Unable to connect
    Database error was:
Access denied for user: 'mythtv@localhost' (Using password: YES)

    couldn't open db
2005-09-07 14:38:39.254 Switching to square mode (blue)
    Segmentation fault
    h3x@01A4:~$
but other than that, i switched to ubuntu because I heard it was a great distro and I wanted to try a debian-based distro (as I am used to Red Hat/Slackware based)

I've heard a lot of good things about it, until recently.

I run gentoo, but because it works just fine I'm in no rush to change (if it ain't broke...)

    I'm gone baby.

for me it just works. I used to play with Mandrake (from 7.2 to 8.1) and it was always editing something to make it work. With Ubuntu for my system, it justw works.

I'm using Ubuntu Breezy at the moment, I use it on all my PCs (5) and it just works (apart from wireless).

The new release (Dapper) has better wireless support (but still shaky) but is a bit new for me.

There is a very good how-to mythtv on the Ubuntu forum or here http://hyams.webhop.net/mythtv/myth_ubuntu.html. This is specifically for Breezy with Hauppage cards.

I tried debian before but it was quite intimidating for a newbie like me. Ubuntu is far more accessible for beginners, it is super easy to install and once you get the hang of apt-get, installing other applications is simple.

There is a helpful, friendly community. So far none has ever acted annoyed at a newbie question in any of the forums I read.

But if you want to get down to the nitty gritty with linux, you can! It is not shielded from you like it seems to be with Suse for instance.

Something like the ivtv installation or mythtv is propably not any different from all other distributions.

For me the main point for Ubuntu was the community.

No really I was kinda interested in trying this brand new thing (sarcasm intentional) called Linux there are alot of distributions and Leo Laporte suggests Ubuntu all the time so Ubuntu was the first one I tried.
Does that make me a sheep?

I really like the apt-get package manager, so I'm more likely to try a distribution if it is Debian based.

The main reason I've stuck with Ubuntu (although its only on my Mythbox at the moment) is that it is fairly easy to find guides on their wiki, or elsewhere on the web, of how to do things.

That said, with any distribution, I prefer to be able to pick and choose which software I have installed, rather than what is installed by default in many distributions, so I don't have a full Ubuntu installation, just server with an upgraded kernel and the software I needed to get MythTV working.

I've been an Ubuntu user since the beginning. It has the maturity of Debian (actually, a little buggier - but you still get good uptimes) but it's very easy to use. I keep using it because it has the best of both worlds in it (closed source and open source).
