Thread: setting display resolution/refresh in Mythbuntu 9.10

I'm connecting my box to my HDTV using a VGA cable, and I need to configure the output to something compatible with the TV, namely, 1920x1080 @ 60 Hz (it's something that doesn't work right now, leading to some kind of incompatible settings error on the TV, so I need to VNC to the box with my laptop to make changes, which is a whole 'nother story...).

Anyway, the XFCE settings tool doesn't give me the correct resolution as an option, I need to find the configuration file to edit it manually, but I can't find it.

Ubuntu wiki says /etc/X11/xorg.conf ... doesn't exist.
MythTV wiki says that or /etc/X11/XF86Config ...also does not exist.

Files in that directory are:
default-display-manager
rgb.txt
X
Xsession
Xsession.options
XvMConfig
XWrapper.config

I opened these to view them, but none (well, those that I didn't need to sudo to view -- I didn't sudo into all of them to check) appeared to have a "monitor" section. I didn't see anything useful at all, actually.

MythTV wiki also discussed a /gdm/gdm-cdd.conf I might need to edit as well...which also was not in said directory.

What file should I be looking for and where? I'm running a fresh download of Mythbuntu 9.10.

I may need to apply different drivers for my Radeon 9600XT as well; I'm currently using whatever came with the Mythbuntu install. I'll investigate that before trying anything fancy with settings.

UPDATE 2/9: I've downloaded fglx or whatever it is using Synaptic, but I'm not sure anything happend. Do I need to do anything after that?

Also, I ran sudo aticonfig, and it said "no compatible adapters detected." I have no idea what it thinks it's using to display anything?! Maybe because I'm viewing using VNC instead of a monitor?

And there's no xorg.conf ANYWHERE ON THE SYSTEM. What the heck?

take a look at this.

FGLX is the ATI video chipset driver. You definately need this and if nothing else the proper installation of this driver should have resulted in you having an xorg.conf file. You should be able to set your resolution now using the built-in screen settings utility.

FYI - This all assumes the fglx driver was installed properly. There are lots of threads on the varrious linux forums about how to do this and what issues you could have. If things still don't work properly you should look into these.
