Thread: Problem connecting to backend

I have a frontend box that I'm trying to get to connect to a mythbackend on a separate box.

mysql access works fine, and I can telnet from the mythfrontend box to the mythbackend box, but whenever mythfrontend tries to speak to the backend I get this:

Could not connect to the master backed server -- Is it Running? Is the address set for it in the setup program correct?

The logged output form mythfrontend shows:

Connecting to backend server: tux:6543 (try 1 of 5)
Connection timed out.

Like I said, I can telnet to that port on the backend machine (tux). I've also tried using the IP address and the fqdn in the backend setup, but still doesn't work.

Other relevant (?) details...
mythbackend box = P4 running Gentoo 2.6.8-r3
mythfrontend box = AMD64 running Gentoo 2.6.8-r4

Anyone got any suggestions?

Are you sure you've entered the ip adress of the backend correctly in mythsetup? Dont use 127.0.0.1 but the real ip.

mythfrontend is very picky about being able to access the mySQL database. If it can't access the mySQL, the frontend won't start; even if everything else if okay.

It sounds to me like you need to check your mysql.txt file (on the frontend machine) and ensure that the DBHostName field is set to the IP address of your backend server.

mysql.txt is found in (on RedHat 9, anyway):

/usr/share/mythtv

Accessing mysql (on the backend) from the frontend is fine - works perfectly.

I know this because when I try using ip address vs hostname vs fqdn in the mythbacked setup program, the frontend picks up the new setting fine.

It just refuses to connect to that hostort combination . (the error message on the frontend includes the correct host/ip address of the backend).

I can telnet to the backend port fine. It's got me stumped.

Well, if you can telnet through to that port, that means the problem lies somewhere on your frontend machine.

Does your backend split out any messages (either to the console or the /var/log/myth/mythbackend.log)? If the connection is established, the backend splits out a message like:

2004-09-23 08:26:08 adding: p3 as a client (events: 0)

... where p3 would be substituted with the name of your frontend.

Do you have any kind of firewall on either your machines? Obviously there isn't one blocking telnet; but that doesn't mean there isn't some other blockage of the mythfrontend app.[/code]

I am getting the same exact problem connecting to the backend.

The log file for the backend(0.17 mythtv) is:

tarting up as the master server.
Starting up as the master server.
ICE default IO error handler doing an exit(), pid = 7642, errno = 107
Couldn't open database
Couldn't open database

Couldn't open database
Couldn't open database

Any help?

my specs
backend: knoppmyth R5A12
frontend: Mandrake 10.1 2.6.8.12

Setup previously worked with backend on Mandrake 10.1 but due to performance issues and just overall stupidity on my part I decided to try Knoppmyth out.

I can connect to backend from frontend running on same box but from nowhere else. But I had to modify mysql access just to connect locally. I did set mysql to allow connections from mythtv@"%" like directions state. but no go.

I thought Knoppmyth was supposed to be the easy way to install? So far it looks like Mandrake is a no-brainer ( easy install with thacs rpms) , just have the well known no sound issues at first.

any help provided is much appreciated! I would really like to use Knoppmyth but....

The only two things you should edit for a backend Knoppmyth install are
/etc/mysql/my.cnf
Go to line 26.
comment out skip-networking.
If you upgraded mysql-server or did a dist-upgrade then this line in the file will be different and you have to look for the new equivalent (allow hosts maybe?).
Then restart mysql
/etc/init.d/mysql restart

and in mythtv-setup 1.General - change the two IP addresses, then restart mythtv-backend.

You shouldn't have to do anything else, specifically the allow connections from mythtv@"%". I don't think you have to worry too much about the security of a database like this.

The frontend for .17 allows you to set the IP for the backend.

No upgrades performed yet, straight up automatic install from R5A12 CD.

Since this is my first foray into a debian dist, what command do I use to install software? Do I need to add sources to get things like plf like with Mandrake? I am much more familiar with Suse, Mandrake, Red Hat/Fedora and FreeBSD.

Is there someplace I am not finding that has docs on Knoppmyth? url?

Recently the KnoppMyth forum took a hit so a large amount of the KnoppMyth knowledge is unaccessible.

apt-get is already set up with a fair amount of sources.
If you look at /etc/apt/sources.list you can add/uncomment some more.

As root:
apt-get update
to update your sources.
apt-cache search programName
to find available packages.
