    I am stumped and unsure what to try next... I have a new machine (Dell 531s, dual core Athlon 4000) replacing an older HP machine that has worked fine for years. I have a serial IR attached and it works fine. The new one has no serial port so I bought a usb to serial adapter. The adapter is recognized but I cannot get the IR receiver to be recognized and I am past my knowledge now. Specific info follows...

    root@mythtest2:/# lsusb

    Bus 001 Device 002: ID 04b4:0711 Cypress Semiconductor Corp.

    root@mythtest2:/# ls -l /dev/lir*
    crw-rw---- 1 root video 61, 0 Sep 6 18:22 /dev/lirc0
    srw-rw-rw- 1 root root 0 Sep 6 18:22 /dev/lircd

    My hardware.conf
    # /etc/lirc/hardware.conf
    #
    # Arguments which will be used when launching lircd
    LIRCD_ARGS=""
    #Don't start lircmd even if there seems to be a good config file
    START_LIRCMD=false
    #Try to load appropriate kernel modules
    LOAD_MODULES=true
    # Run "lircd --driver=help" for a list of supported drivers.
    DRIVER="default"
    # If DEVICE is set to /dev/lirc and devfs is in use /dev/lirc/0 will be
    # automatically used instead
    DEVICE="/dev/ttyUSB0"
    MODULES="lirc_dev lirc_serial"

    Any hints? Thanks.

    Oops - forgot the syslog...

    My understanding is that it won't work. The IR reciever isn't actually using the real RS232 protocol that the port was designed for. Hence, when you use the converter, the signals don't get converted properly (it's not getting what it's expecting).

    Thanks for the reply. This converter works fine for a usb / serial ir blaster (several people have that working) and I have read where this type of adapter works for standard serial ir receivers. Everything seems to be seeing the hardware but I just can't figure out what link is missing...
