MythTV SVN

SVN is the common name given to Subversion in reference to the name of its command line interface.
Subversion is an open source application used for revision control and is designed specifically to be a modern replacement for CVS and shares a number of the same key developers.

Subversion: Improvements over CVS

Subversion was created as a replacement for CVS. Its improvements include:
  • Atomic commits. Interrupted commit operations do not cause repository inconsistency or corruption.
  • Renamed/copied/moved/removed files retain full revision history.
  • Native support for binary files, with space-efficient binary-diff storage.
  • Directories are versioned. Entire directory trees can be moved around and/or copied very quickly, and retain full revision history.
  • Constant time branching and tagging.
  • Optimized repository accesses. This reduces unnecessary network traffic to the repository host.
  • Full MIME support - the MIME Type of each file can be viewed or changed, with the software knowing which MIME types can have their differences from previous versions shown.

MythTV History

The project was started in April 2002 by Isaac Richards. Richards explains his motivation to begin the project on its website:

"I got tired of the rather low quality cable box that AT&T Broadband provides with their digital cable service. It's slow to change channels, ridden with ads, and the program guide is a joke. So, I figured it'd be fun to try and build a replacement. Yes, I could have just bought a TiVo, but I wanted to have more than just a PVR - I want a web browser built in, a mail client, maybe some games. Basically, I want the mythical convergence box that's been talked about for a few years now."

MythTV has become a very mature project. As of Feb 2006, the project was in a very usable state at version 0.19. Development is coordinated on a publicly accessible SVN server.
