MythTV
MythTV is a GPL open source application for Linux designed to allow any computer (that meets the specified minimum requirements) to function as a personal video recorder.
MythTV 0.21 is currently under development and no expected release date has been announced.
These are the changes in the current development version of MythTV from the MythTV 0.20 release. Currently these features are slated for the MythTV 0.21 release. Some of these changes, most notably the fixes, have been backported to the MythTV 0.20.2 release.
As always, these features are available in MythTV SVN but be prepared if you plan to run this version and subscribe to the -dev and -commit mailing lists to keep up to date on development.
MythTV 0.21
There will be numerous changes and bug fixes from MythTV 0.20 to MythTV 0.21.The major changes in MythTV 0.21 are:
Updated through revision 14225
- Added Watch List feature to Watch Recordings listing programs most useful to watch in order to catch up on series and shows you have fallen behind in watching.
- Added support for QAM recording using HDHomeRun device. Requires firmware 21-09-2006 or newer.
- New official plugins: MythMovies: provides show times and cinema listings based on Zip/Post code and a given radius.
- New official plugins: MythZoneMinder: ZoneMinder is a system for monitoring cctv cameras. It uses a web interface which doesn't work very well on a MythTV only system so the plugin provides a remote friendly interface to some of the functions provided by ZM.
- Added storage groups. This allows multiple recording directories, where each storage group is a list of directories.
- Added auto discovery of MythTV servers/frontends
- Added FLV playback support for MythWeb
- Reduced mythfrontend memory consumption by upto 75% depending on theme and resolution.

MythTV History
The project was started in April 2002 by Isaac Richards. Richards explains his motivation to begin the project on its website:
"I got tired of the rather low quality cable box that AT&T Broadband provides with their digital cable service. It's slow to change channels, ridden with ads, and the program guide is a joke. So, I figured it'd be fun to try and build a replacement. Yes, I could have just bought a TiVo, but I wanted to have more than just a PVR - I want a web browser built in, a mail client, maybe some games. Basically, I want the mythical convergence box that's been talked about for a few years now."
MythTV has become a very mature project. As of Feb 2006, the project was in a very usable state at version 0.19. Development is coordinated on a publicly accessible SVN server.
