Is anyone using the HD-PVR with Myth?

I have an R5000-HD, but Dish is unable to fix a major error on my account so may need to go with Direct.

I've done a search here, but it seems the only posts are recommending the HD-PVR, no actual user experience.

I know the HD-PVR is in svn versions of Myth, but is it actually working? Is it reliable yet? Channel changing? Video tuning? Would I need a Witch Doctor to make it work?

You need to be comfortable with running a trunk version of Myth. If you can build Myth from source then you shouldn't have any problems. The driver build is pretty simple. It's v4l and is a lot simpler/easier/robuster than either LIRC or older ivtv versions.

Dunno if the ir blaster is working yet. I use usb/serial control for my STB.

Trunk in general seems to have more problems. That's to be expected since it's a dev version. Once I ironed out some keepalive scripts even that wasn't such a big deal anymore.

Oh, I don't mind compiling SVN.

I'd just like to know whether recording HD with the HD-PVR is reliable?

Like I said... you'll have more problems from the SVN version of Myth than you will with the HD-PVR or Janne's driver. There's just one caveat. I don't know if the HD-PVR will tolerate resolution changes yet. In the version I have that will cause the driver/myth to hang.

It's very easy to work around by locking your STB to one output resolution.

Oh, so you're saying that 'trunk' = SVN.

And it sounds like you're saying that the HD-PVR comes with a Linux driver for Myth?

Looked for Janne's version, but ended up at grunau.be, which only seems to have ffmpeg improvements.

Trunk is the main branch in SVN.

Janne's HD-PVR driver is included in a fork of the current version of Video 4 Linux. You basically build his version of v4l to get his HD-PVR driver.

    See the Wiki:

Any updates? Do we still need a special build of v4l or are the changes in the main version now? Does anyone know if the HD-PVR support is included in the weekly fixes builds from Mythbuntu?

I'm looking into picking up an HD-PVR and would like to know what I'm getting myself into.

I have my HDPVR working pretty well. still working out a few bugs, but i think it mainly has to do with my raid array. not sure what the current kernel for mythubuntu is, but i'm running 8.04, and the driver didnt work with that kernel. i upgraded to the PPA version of the kernel(version currently in use for ubuntu 8.10, and the driver works fine. also, when you download the svn version. on the frontend at least, you need to use /configure --enable-libfaad to be able to play the recording from the hdpvr. another bug that i'm trying to figure out is i cant play live tv. i'm not sure why, but i have both my hdpvr and pvr-250 in the backend, and havent really played with it at all.
i really need to take a weekend and fix all those little bugs. hard to do with a newborn in the house though.
    good luck.
edit: also the other day i tried to record the 2 hour 24 showings on sunday and monday, and wound up with 2 empty files, not sure why.

just an update, i seemed to have gotten everything working propery (cept livetv). i downloaded the lastest trunk, applied the patches(which i didnt do last time). and updated the firmware.
havent had a problem in the past few days, since i recompiled.
with the livetv thing, there is a patch, i patched the backend, but not the frontend. i'm going to try that and see if it works.
