Default Choppy high def video on Acer Aspire Revo

I've installed a Mythbuntu front-end on my Revo and it is working pretty good for the most part. I'm using the VPDAU playback profile and the 185 NVidia driver. I can play 720P with no problems. Unfortunately 1080 content stutters (not sure if the episode of Chuck I'm testing with is 1080i or 1080p). If I play the same video through an NFS mount using mplayer, it plays fine. If I run ksysguard, I see the CPU stay below 40% with both mythtv and mplayer, but the network usage is significantly different. With mythtv the network alternates between heavy and light traffic. With mplayer, the usage is fairly high but fairly consistent. I think I need to optimize my network connection, but nothing I have tried seems to help. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm at a loss at this point.

Thanks,
Joe

I have the same device and was able to correct the stutter. You need to modify the deinterlace settings under the VDPAU High Quality playback profile.

Go to Utilities/Setup -> Setup -> TV Settings -> Playback. From here I believe it's 3 or 4 menus in where you select the profile (CPU+, CPU++, CPU-- etc....). Highlight the Edit button and go 1 or 2 screens over to the deinterlace options. My primary is Bob2x and the secondary is Temporal.

There is also another discussion on the page below that has a few people that have used different combinations of deinterlacer settings using the Revo 1600. If my suggestion does not work, you may want to look here for more options.

Can you use the 195.xx drivers? Jean-Yves Avenard posted the 185.xx drivers are "crap" and he spends a little time working on them so I value his opinion...

Thanks for the info guitar1158. Actually, someone else responded to this post and I replied, but I don't see either of those posts. Not sure why. Basically, he suggested about 4 things, the first being to use the VPDAU SLIM profile. I did that and it all worked.

Default VDPAU SLIM solves choppy video Acer Revo

My over-the-air recordings from HdHomerun are great on VPDAU high quality but Hauppage HDPVR 1080 (H.264) content from cable box was choppy/stuttered at many different bit rates

VDPAU SLIM was the final item that removed the choppy stutter video. Thanks!!! IT doesn't look absolutely perfect - but very hard to notice.

I also upgraded memory from 1GB to 3GB, changed BIOS video frame to 512mb and upgraded firmware on HDPVR

Box now works fine with 1080 content as combined front/back - recording two programs simultaneously and watching one. Generally Acer Revo is 60-70% CPU idle. I schedule commercial flagging in off hours. (perhaps this isn't needed anymore)

Note that before this fix I was able to download 1080 H.264 video and play back perfectly so this VDPAU SLIM profile (the deinterlace settings) seems to be more about the exact format that the HDPVR produces.

The deinterlace filters will only be run on interlaced content.
