MythTV Boinc

Most people's MythTV boxes are always running and much of the time will be doing nothing.... so why not put all those spare CPU cycles to use ?

The BBC in conjunction with the boinc project and Oxford University, England, are running a grid-computing climate change experiment. And MythTVTalk.com has created a team on the project that you can join!

Join the MythTV users Boinc Team

If you just want to get on with it and sign up then follow these instructions:
N.B.: These instructions will work with all distros, but it exists other ways of getting started depending on your distro (i.e.: Gentoo with emerge, etc.).
  1. First of all you need to register an account and join the MythTVTalk team by visiting the BBC Climate Change website.
  2. Then download the software here
  3. Change the permissions on the downloaded file: chmod u+rx bbcclimate.sh
  4. Run the bbcclimate.sh script in a terminal window (it creates a folder called bbcclimate)
  5. Follow the instructions that pop up to execute the client and then the gui manager
  6. Once the GUI pops up select existing user and type in your newly-registered details
The backend software runs in the background with a 'nice' setting of 19 so it's the lowest possible priority and can be started by executing run_client in the bbcclimate folder. This is all you need to run once it's set up - you don't need to run the GUI for it to process the models and send the data. So you probably want to add this to a startup file so it starts automatically each time the PC starts.

MythTV Boinc Team Stats

If you want to have a quick look at the stats, you should have a look at the BBC Climate Change website.

But if you feel like going deeper into the statistics, you will be able to find very detailed stats about the MythTV users team on the boincstats website. For instance, the BoincStats website allows you to check each member's statistics with graphs, etc.

To monitor how well is working your MythTV boxes, just visit your own page on the BBC Climate Change website.
N.B.: It is likely to take 1-2 days before your details appear on the page, so be patient!
